by the ccc. >>> it is saturday, december 8th. good morning, everyone. i'm randi kaye. victor blackwell is off today. we start with a landmark decision by the supreme court. the justices decided to hear two ca cases. joe johns has a look. >> randi, after weeks of speculation the court decided to take up two cases on same-sex marriage. the first one about the defensive marriage act. windsor against the united states. they were married in toronto, canada, in 2007. spire died in 2007 in new york at a time when new york recognized same-sex marriages that were performed outside the state. she was required to pay $363,000 on federal estate taxes on her inheritance that she would not have had to pay that opposite marriages get. so, a pretty clean case here and even the obama administration has already said it doesn't think the constitutionality of the defensive marriage act can withstand a legal attack. the second case the court decided to take on is proposition 8, the california ballot initiative adding a state constitutional amendment in 2008 that said only marriage between a man or woman is valid

to cnn sunday morning. i i'm randi kaye. the kansas city chiefs will play. jovan belcher shot and killed his girlfriend yesterday before heading to the team's practice facility where he turned the gun on himself in front of his coach and the team's general manager. the two had a 3-month-old daughter together. judges at egypt's supreme constitutional court are walking off the job as protests continue in the country in what they call a dismal black day for egypt's judiciary. the judges say they will not return to work until they are guaranteed they are safe. this follows days of sometimes violent protests. supporters of embattled president mohammed morsi surrounded the court building today to keep the judges from entering. the court was due to rule on the parliament. >>> nobody loved basketball and teaching kids more than rick. that's how one friend and colleague is remembering rick majerus. he has died at the age of 64. he stepped down from st. louis university last month for health reasons, and he had only one losing season in 25 years. >>> this morning former president george h.w. bush
a moment. he says he's only seen his daughter twice since he found out where she was. first, randi kaye has the story of how all this happened. >> reporter: at 21 months, this little girl is caught in a fierce battle between the only parents she's ever known and her biological father, who says until last year, he never even knew she existed. it all started in february, 2009, when staff sergeant terry achan married tyra bland. in june 2010 the couple learned they were expecting a baby girl, whom they planned to name talia. about six months later, though, he was called for duty so he left texas for south carolina. by then the couple's marriage was on the rocks. his wife even suggested adoption but he wanted to be a father. still, just ten days after he left town, his wife went against his wishes. >> she just made the decision not to let me be a father and went behind my back, deceived me, and gave my child up for adoption. >> tyra bland called the adoption center of choice in utah. around that same time, a utah couple, jared and christi frye, called the same agency looking to adopt. when blan
>>> good morning, everyone. i'm randi kaye. it is 7:00 on the east coast, 4:00 a.m. on the west. thanks so much for starting your morning with us. a deadly attack in afghanistan has left five people dead and at least 18 others wounded and the taliban is claiming responsibility. it happened here at a joint u.s. afghan base near the airfield. there are no reports yet of u.s. casualties. joining me by phone is journalist ben farmer. ben, this attack involves suicide bombs and gunmen. can you tell us exactly how things unfolded? >> yes, it seems to have been a very complex attack. it began soon after dawn around 6:00 here local time. it began with two suicide car bombs. these were vehicles packed with explosives, driven at the gates of the airfield base, and they detona detonated. soon after that, a wave of attackers with rifles and suicide vests stormed the gates. this prompted a two-hour gun battle. it was all over in about two hours. nato says none of the attackers, none of the militants managed to breach the defenses. all of them were killed. however, we have reports that four o

now, welcome back, everyone. i'm randi kaye. victor blackwell is off today. here are five stories we're watching this morning. in our first story a royal prank takes a tragic turn and now two australian radio hosts are off the air. this after the nurse who took a prank call from the deejays about the pregnant duchess of cambridge committed suicide. the nurse who had worked at king eduard xii hospital for two years leaves behind a husband and two children. >>> the tapes which contained information on agents and investigations were accidentally left in a pouch on a subway. it actually happened in 2008, but the tapes never been found and an investigation is under way and changes to agency protocol have already been made as a result. >>> lawmakers demanded answers after the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. well, now they will hear from secretary of state hillary clinton. she will testify before a house committee on a state department report on the september 11th attack that killed u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. the report is expected next
